Senior Director, Sales and Global Distribution

Tornado Spectral Systems designs, manufactures, and sells dispersive optical spectrometers and systems primarily for Raman spectroscopy and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical technique but Raman systems have traditionally been limited by a lack of sensitivity due to the input slit trade-off between resolution and throughput. Our inspired Scientists and Engineers have developed methods that eliminate the classic performance bottlenecks in optical spectrometer design, unlocking the use of this technology for a range of newly envisioned applications. We are now looking to grow our team to assist in bringing these technologies to the market.

Tornado is seeking to add a growth-minded Senior Director, Sales and Global Distribution to lead our sales team. You will manage and oversee all aspect of sales and global distribution. Your days will be spent providing product training and support to distributors, generating new product ideas and communicating them internally; establishing sales objectives/projections for each territory allocation, and maintaining responsibility for seeking global opportunities to generate revenue and meet projected fiscal sales targets. You will be required to travel for meetings with customers and partners and to develop key relationships, while recruiting and training distributors.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • As a member of our senior leadership team, you will develop strategic direction for the company while being responsible for delivering on an annual revenue plan
  • Identifies business opportunities by identifying prospects and evaluating their position in the industry; researching and analyzing sales options
  • Maintains relationships with clients by providing support, information, and guidance; researching and recommending new opportunities; recommending profit and service improvements
  • Manage applications team so that appropriate marketing collateral is created
  • Providing input on product specifications to allow maximum saleability
  • Selecting (and leading the activities of) the professional sales and applications team, and contributing to the decision making process related to hiring new subordinates and designing compensation plans
  • Providing input on profitability analyses from a distribution standpoint for potential new distributors
  • Manage distributors to establish annual revenue and volume budget. Ensure distributor sales plans are developed and executed to deliver budget results
  • Conduct joint sales calls with distributors and sales agents. Coordinate all marketing and technical support for distribution and direct sales team
  • Provide detailed and accurate sales forecasting
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Sciences or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive responsibility in sales of medical or scientific instruments
  • Experience in managing an export sales territory or export distributors
  • Ability to travel frequently
  • Requisite knowledge of applicable international business cultures
  • Results driven and process improvement focused
  • Ability to gather and use business and market information on an ongoing basis for strategic planning and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrates ability to get things done within the distributor’s / customer’s territory
  • Verbally transmit ideas, instructions and information so they are clearly understood by others in formal, or informal face to face situations; writes clear, concise on grammatically correct letters, memos, business presentations and instructions which others can understand
  • Ability to be “hands-on” with Tornado’s instruments
  • Spectroscopy experience desirable

Senior Field Application Specialist (United States or Toronto, Canada)

Tornado is looking to add a Senior Field Application Specialist to our team.  You will work with our other “agents” in the field to be the voice between our customer and our technical team.  Your days will be spent supporting pre-sales activities through the analysis of customer samples, on-site support for demos and trials, data analysis, writing reports and phone/email communications addressing prospect questions, to performing post-sales support for instrument placements including installations, training, assistance with data analysis and on-going communications.  You will write application and technical notes to be used for marketing collateral. This may involve setting up experiments to collect data, or may necessitate the use of outside data with permission.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field, with a PhD or M.S with industry experience
  • Experience in molecular spectroscopy in process control applications
  • Knowledge of Chemometric modelling software a bonus
  • Ability to communicate with and influence external and internal stake holders
  • Strong presentation skills and comfortable presenting to large groups and/or VPs
  • Ability to manage multiple projects on time and within budget
  • Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment

This position will require approximately 50% travel on average but demands will vary according to the need.
