Raman Innovation Scientist

Tornado is looking to add a Raman Innovation Scientist to our Customer Success Group. Key Accountabilities
  • Support pre-sales activities through the analysis of customer samples, developing chemometric models, on-site and remote support for demos and trials, data analysis, writing reports and phone/email communications and addressing prospect questions
  • Provide post-sales support for instrument placements including installations, training, assistance with data analysis, assistance with developing methods and on-going communications about evolving needs and requirements
  • Write application and technical notes to be used for marketing collateral and develop presentations for conferences and webinars
  • Test spectroscopic measurement sensors, calibration accessories, and other optical subsystems at the Tornado laboratory in Toronto, following test protocols
Requirements
  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field, with a PhD or M.S.
  • Superior inter-personal skills
  • Direct experience in the pharmaceutical, chemical, polymer, petrochemical or related industry
  • Past customer facing experience in an instrument company (applications or customer enablement in a technical capacity)
  • Experience in molecular spectroscopy, and familiarity of the application of such techniques in process control environments
  • Knowledge of Chemometric modelling techniques and software
  • Ability to communicate with and influence external and internal stakeholders
  • Strong presentation skills and comfortable presenting to large groups and/or customer VIPs
  • Ability to manage multiple projects on time and within budget
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment

This position will require approximately 50% travel on average but demands will vary according to the need.

Research and Development Technologist

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the successful candidate will perform testing of prototype laser-based spectrometer devices and assist in turning these prototypes into finished products for use by Tornado’s customers in the pharmaceutical, bioprocessing, chemical, and petrochemical industries.

Key Accountabilities
  • Co-develop and follow rigorous methodologies for evaluating the performance and reliability of optical prototype systems
  • Deduce robust conclusions from test data in support of product commercialization
  • Contribute to Tornado’s culture of technological innovation and delivery of trustworthy real-time measurements to our customers
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Test spectroscopic measurement sensors, calibration accessories, and other optical subsystems at the Tornado laboratory in Toronto, following test protocols jointly developed with the CTO and Operations team
  • Under guidance from the CTO, analyze data collected from testing and prepare presentations for internal review
  • Assemble and validate production-quality optical accessory products that Tornado builds in-house
  • Gain familiarity with all Tornado systems (hardware and software) in order to assist with product integration and customer support
  • Contribute to testing of pre-release Tornado software
  • Contribute to Tornado documentation writing and review prior to customer release
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in spectroscopy, optical engineering, analytic chemistry, experimental physics, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on experience with optical systems, spectroscopy, and/or laser optics
  • Familiarity with data analysis programming languages: Matlab slightly preferred, but Python, IDL, R, or equivalent platform also acceptable
  • Strong communication skills: Able to convey technical concepts, analysis results, and other mission-critical information, both in written documents and verbal interactions, in a fashion that can be clearly understood by other Tornado team members in formal and informal settings
  • Some work from home is permitted (especially during the pandemic) but the majority of the successful candidate’s work time will be spent at Tornado’s headquarters and laboratory space near Pearson Airport
  • Available to start full-time work in the first quarter of 2021

Software/Product Test Engineer

Reporting to the Head of Software Engineering, the successful candidate will collaborate with the hardware and software teams to develop automated test protocols for the company’s hardware and software products.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop, maintain, and execute automated system-level and component-based test methodologies
  • Innovate test solutions to achieve the fastest test results possible
  • Track test versions and results throughout the lifetime of Tornado’s serviceable products
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work in collaboration with the technical team to plan, develop, and execute automated test framework.  Ensure test protocols trace back to their design requirements
  • Plan and implement complementary test tools and fixtures
  • Develop test APIs for software application UI front-end interfaces and lower-level services (MCU/CPU communications)
  • Develop working knowledge of software application stack to determine appropriate testing at all levels (unit, integration, and system-level)
  • Track and communicate test results in a timely, effective, and automated manner
  • Champion bug/issue tracking system
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, software engineering or a related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive responsibility in system-level or component level testing of hardware and software components
  • Professional experience with C#, C++, C, Python, .NET Framework
  • Proficient with software development tools including IDEs and defect tracking. Working knowledge of automated test tools will be an asset
  • Experience with OPC UA, Modbus or other industrial communications protocol preferred
  • Good communicator: able to transmit ideas and information that is clearly understood by others in formal and informal settings

  • Identification of KPIs for tracking product quality
