OCTANE-860™ wins in the category “Detector, Sensing, Imaging and Camera”
Tornado, a Bruker Company is pleased to announce that OCTANE-860™ has been recognized by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) as a Prism Award Winner for 2014.
The Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is a leading international competition that honors the world’s best new photonic products on the market. Tornado’s OCTANE-860™, the world’s first commercially available high performance OCT spectrometer on a chip is the winner in the category of “Detector, Sensing, Imaging and Camera”.
Prism award winners were announced during the SPIE Photonics West conference in San Francisco on February 5th. This is the 2nd year in a row that Tornado has been recognized for innovative products. Last year our HyperFlux™ spectrometer, which uses our patented High Throughput Virtual Slit (HTVS™), was chosen a Prism Award finalist in the category of “Optics and Optical Components”.
“The OCTANE-860™ utilizes TSS’ nanophotonics technology which was developed in our Ithaca, NY research facility,” says Dr. Art Nitkowski, lead scientist at Tornado in Ithaca. “Nanophotonics has the ability to replace table-sized scientific instruments with silicon chips fabricated with the same techniques used on microprocessors for computers with significant cost reductions.”
Tornado’s OCTANE-860™ is a fully packaged, turn-key solution that is optimized for OCT applications and centered at a wavelength of 860 nm, using photolithography and wafer based fabrication techniques adapted for the visible and near-IR wavelength range. OCTANE matches the typical performance specifications of ophthalmic OCT spectrometers with the added benefit of an ultra-robust, small and low-cost package.
“The OCTANE-860™ is representative of next generation optical sensing hardware for use in diverse applications ranging from ophthalmology to dentistry to industrial non-destructive (NDT) testing,” says Dr. Bradley Schmidt, CEO of Tornado Spectral. “To be recognized two years in a row for products which deploy our next generation technological advancements and IP is a testament to the widely held belief that Tornado’s future is bright and exciting.”
